Tinoush Bahrami is a graduate of Goldsmiths College, London University, Tehran University and Tehran conservatoire. He has studied TAR and Persian classical repertory “RADIF” under great master Habibellah Salehi, Hooshang Zarif, Hosain Alizade and Majid Kiani. He also learned SETAR under Dariush Safvat. Tinoush has wide experience in playing TAR and SETAR.
He has performed with some of the best known Iranian musicians such as Hosain Alizade (aid concert for Guilan and Zanjan earthquake victims 1989) and Parviz Meshkatian (concert Homayon 1999) in Vahdat hall in Tehran. This latest concert has been recorded live and published in 2001. Tinoush taught in Tehran conservatoire and Sureh University before becoming the leader of the traditional ensemble of the Tehran national conservatoire.
After years of practice and research on Sufism, Philosophy and mystical Persian literature he wrote a thesis about the role of Philosophy and Symbolism in Persian traditional music in 1996.
He has performed in numerous concerts in Iran including the first commemoration of HAFIZ organized by UNESCO in 1998. Tinoush now lives in London and has participated in various numbers of festivals and concerts in the U.K as well as giving regular concerts, music lessons and workshops. He taught Persian classical music at the School of oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London and also given seminars for Goldsmiths college.
In 2003 he recorded some solo tracks, published in the “World Passport” collection by EXTREME MUSIC. He also had several appearances in BBC world service programs.
Tinoush have earned his Master’s degree in Ethnomusicology, under supervision of Professor John Baily in 2004. His study of the music and musical life of Old Tehran in 1920’s, ended successfully with writing a dissertation with the topic of “Music of Old Tehran” and a recording contract with METIER Records for reconstructing and recording of the music of this era.
In year 2005 Tinoush founded “Radif Art & Culture” organization in the U.K, an educational center of Persian classical music, to promote the traditional repertoire of Iranian music “Radif” by organizing workshops, seminars, performances and cultural events. An amateur ensemble formed by students and collogues of the “Radif Art & Culture” also is being conducting by him in London. This ensemble has performed in a form of music and dance group in Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank, London in 2005.
Tinoush was a co-founder of Persian dance course in Richmond Adult Community College in 2002 and also is in the process of establishing a nationally recognized qualification in the U.K to enable young students gaining the GCSE and A level qualifications in Persian music.
He is currently engaged in a new musical project with some fellow musicians, based on which he call “Iranian magham”, a collaboration of musical modes from Iran’s regional music.
